"Road traffic safety (RTS) is a global concern."

EN ISO 39001 – Road Traffic Safety Management Systems

Brief description

Road traffic safety (RTS) is a global concern. It is estimated that around 1,2 million people are killed and 20 million to 50 million are injured on roads around the world each year, and that this level is rising. The socio-economic and health impacts are substantial.

ISO 39001 standard provides a tool to help organizations reduce, and ultimately eliminate, the incidence and risk of death and serious injury related to road traffic crashes. This focus can result in a more cost-effective use of the road traffic system.

ISO 39001 standard identifies elements of good Road Traffic Safety management practice that will enable the organization to achieve its desired Road Traffic Safety results.

Adaptation and implementation of the road traffic safety management systems contributes to the United Nations’ ambitious target of reducing road deaths and serious injuries by 50 per cent by the end of 2030.

Detailed description

ISO 39001:2012 Standard helps an organization to improve its Road Traffic Safety performance and to proactively manage Road Traffic Safety risks, save lives, reduce lost productivity and demonstrate its commitment to both safety and social responsibility.

Key elements of the Road Traffic Safety management system are:

  • emphasis on the context of the organization
  • risk-based thinking throughout towards achieving ambitious road safety results through the Safe System goal and approach
  • integration of the Road Traffic Safety management into overall business strategy
  • requires top management involvement and accountability
  • emphasis on communication with and understanding of interested parties
  • increases efficient management

ISO 39001 standard shares the high-level structure (HLS), as defined by Annex SL, and core text with other key international management system standards and can be easily integrated with other management systems.
